Art Taichung 2022

art taichung website

Art has been a fundamental essence of Taichung for an extensive period of time. With the inauguration of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in 1988, an environment to appreciate a diverse array of art has since been opened to the general public. Other cultural and art activities have also been actively taking place in the city, with large areas of natural green zones created through fantastic urban planning which also works well with Taichung’s pleasant weather. Cultural commercial areas are interlaced with luscious trees and other vegetation, blending together areas that the city’s residents can enjoy in their everyday lives, as Taichung continues to be selected on several occasions as the most livable city in Taiwan.

Departing from the deep-rooted progress made in the past fives years, the 10th ART TAICHUNG 2022 will take place this year from July  15th to 17th at the The Lin Hotel Taichung. The overarching theme of this year is Perceptual Dimensions: Sculptures in the Citywhich will focus on how to elevate a city’s aesthetic sense and how to redefine a city’s ethos and ideology. By expanding the art collector demographic and invigorating the art market, ART TAICHUNG 2022 aims at creating a distinctive international art event in Taiwan. Bringing together 77 exhibitors, including 69 Taiwanese galleries, 5 overseas galleries, and 4 youth awards. More than 500 artists and 3,000 splendid artistic creations from home and abroad will be presented in the brand-new location – the 8th to 11th floors of the Lin Hotel in Taichung (the 7th floor is the ticket office and the conference service desk), and the exhibition will be more popular with a novel online exhibition hall preview.

The online exhibition hall has been officially opened at 10:00 am on July 6, 2022 (Wednesday), and the exhibition hall will be open until 7/19 (Tue) 23:59. Philips Hong Kong Spring “ULTRA/NEO”, presented a series of Spanish artists including Javier Calleja, Edgar Plans and Rafa Macarrón.

Ting Ting Art Space Exclusive Interview

Their works show the pure inner world of children in a concise and clear image, and describe wonderful and grotesque dreams and imaginations. Some people compare them to “Yoshitomo of Nara in Spain”. One of the main reasons for the popularity of these artists around the world is that Asian collectors like their works, and Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Taipei are the main cities. Tintin Gallery in Taipei is a pioneer in cultivating these Spanish artists.

Javier Calleja

“Ultra” and “Neo” mean “extreme” and “innovative”,  aptly describing the avant-garde creative styles of artists born after 1970. Calleja’s big-eyes characters always make people feel warm and pure. Characters Calleja’s created are a reflection of his happy childhood and his rich imagination. In his most famous works, he transports children back to a situation full of comfort and familiarity. Surrounded by flat, brightly colored expanses, Calleja paints children unsullied by the concerns of the adult world.

mixed media on canvas
150 x 280 cm
Estimate : HKD $1,200,000 – 1,800,000
SOLD FOR HKD $3,024,000

In “Creatures of the Night”, a blue, multi-eyed creature shoots glowing neon bubbles into the air while standing in front of a towering abstract backdrop covered in intricate graffiti. A group of figures running up a labyrinth of ladders, passing brushes to each other or sprinting with a tube of red paint in hand, evokes the surreal landscapes of Spanish artist Juan Miró. There is a small red house in the lower right corner with a warm glow inside, and paper and pencils outside the door, perhaps alluding to the scene of manuscripts, sketches and painting tools scattered throughout the living room of the artist in his childhood, making the picture full of nostalgia.

Edgar Plans

In his works, Plans deliberately uses the infinite creativity of children’s paintings to return to simple visual presentation, thus reflecting a pure artistic expression. However, the various mediums in the work are intertwined into layers of intricate visual planes, which also demonstrate the artist’s superb creative skills.

Estimate : HKD $700,000 – 1,000,000
SOLD FOR HKD $1,386,000

Rafa Macarrón seems most directly related to the Spanish surrealist artist Juan Miró. His work is filled with cartoons and grotesque creatures, bizarre scenes and vibrant colors. These images and colors themselves seem to have life, dragging people into a whimsical fairy tale world.

Macarrón’s “Untitled (Universe)” is the artist’s largest work ever to appear in the auction market, depicting a colorful and poetic galaxy, whether in surreal expression, or The lyrical nature of the works echoes Juan Miró.

Rafa Macarrón | English | Metal Magazine

Rafa Macarrón

For example, in Miro’s work “Carnival of Clowns”, the protagonists in the painting are some alien figures drawn by Miro in the early days. The work depicts the hustle and bustle of the festival day, when abstract characters gather together. Although the composition of the painting is divided by a simple horizon line, Miró’s characters appear to float in mid-air, leaving the viewer unable to discern the depth of the space. The plain background behind the characters accentuates their figurative nature, as well as their individuality.

Macarrón’s build a picture through the extension of color and simple lines, presenting a creative futuristic universe. This universe is inhabited by a group of strange creatures who build bridges and houses between the earth and the sun. Macarrón’s use a variety of different materials in their work to seek freedom of artistic expression.

Similar to Yoshitomo Nara, the works of Javier Calleja, Edgar Plans and Rafa Macarrón are not only cute and joyful on the surface, but also contain many deep meanings. It expresses the author’s various feelings about modern life, so it can arouse widespread love and resonance.

Albert Pinya

Albert Pinya is an ultra-contemporary artist who lives and works in Palma, ranked among the Top 100,000 globally, and among the Top 1,000 in Spain. In Pinya’s universe, everything is simple, energetic and dynamic.  His work is based on a deliberate and ironic ingenuity that manages to dismantle the perverse structures of reality. He takes inspiration from movies, TV series and cartoons, and has quickly developed his own identifiable style, in which applies the codes of popular culture, comics, illustration and a thoughtful naive aesthetic that hides a precise treatment of the themes he explores.

The artworks of Pinya are a continuation of the rich tradition of pop art, begun in the second half of the 1950s by artists such as Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and Richard Hamilton. Pinya’s work, although no stranger to socio-political and ecological reflections, seems to laugh, in effect, at the dogmatic gravity that for some is the paradigm of our time. The works show lubricious linear forms, entering and exiting from different orifices, forming complex circuits and deep, pulsating spaces.

His work denies “l’ art pour l’art” and regards art as a means of expression, which should be eminently communicative and always be based on an ideology. That is, rather than talking about ‘artistic creation’ we should talk about ‘artistic reaction’. Painting, drawing, intervention, installation, performance, graphic work and sound are the means with which he develops the discourse of his narrations. One of his greatest obsessions focuses on the study and observation of human beings and the way they establish relationships with society and with the environment.

Akihiko Yoshida

Over the past few decades, Yoshida has produced more than 10,000 works, ranging from small items such as belts to large works over two meters high. Regardless of the dimensions, each piece is carefully crafted and is equally important to Yoshida. From softly sculpted objects to expressive figures, he hopes to bring laughter to everyone through his work, an art that embodies warm feelings of Yoshida.
Yoshida’s sculptures are visually as ethereal and light as porcelain. What makes people unexpected is that they are carved from a whole piece of wood. There is no stiffness in traditional woodcuts at all. Every piece of work has its own aura, each very lively. In recent years, Yoshida’s creative themes are mainly animals. These animals are records of the artist’s daily thoughts, acting as his spiritual diary. Through anthropomorphism, the artist seeks to express the universality of joy and sorrow that humans experience through animals. If you look closely, you can see that the eyes of the animals are closed, giving a sense of serenity, reverence, and security. The artist also composes a lovely poem for each piece.

Cai Yi Xiu

Cai Yixiu was born in Fujian in the year 1987. After graduating from Fuzhou Arts and Crafts School, Cai Yixiu started interning at the studio of Shanghai-based artist Su Xiaobo in 2008. He has been working in the field of lacquer art for many years and is now a professional artist. He focuses on lacquer art creation and is affectionately referred to as Cai Yixiu by his friends due to his resemblance to the character “Yixiu.” His real name is Cai Chuanxiao. “The integration of tradition and modernity has always been what I’ve been exploring,” Cai Yixiu said. During his youth, Cai Yixiu studied under the guidance of artists Zheng Chongyao and Su Xiaobo.

Initially, during his self-exploration and creative phase, he leaned more towards mastering the technical aspects of craftsmanship. Under the tutelage of Zheng Chongyao, he honed his craft skills. However, after coincidentally meeting Su Xiaobo, he broke free from the confines of traditional craftsmanship and seemed to discover a new world. From then on, he began contemplating the subtle connection between art and craftsmanship. Cai Yixiu also mentioned the challenges he faced during his studies. Both teachers held high standards for themselves and extended the same to their students. The traditional techniques of Zheng Chongyao and the contemporary artistic language of Su Xiaobo complemented each other and collided in fruitful ways. This experience influenced Cai Yixiu’s creations, and now his lacquer art is “shedding” its past. Breaking away from traditional craftsmanship, Cai Yixiu presents a fresh perspective on lacquerware that deviates from the norms set by artists in the field. Despite the costliness of lacquer, the young artist Cai Yixiu hopes to not view lacquer art merely as a craft but rather as a material for free artistic expression, breaking traditional rules under the influence of art.

Viewers often sense “vicissitude” and “loneliness” in your creations. Can you share the story behind these themes in your life?Cai Yixiu: Many people who see my work say that it doesn’t seem like something created by someone my age. The traces of time evident in my works often stem from personal life experiences. In the work environment in Fuzhou, I am essentially on my own, and my creative space is relatively enclosed. Facing walls that carry the remnants of time on a daily basis, being in constant contact with these atmospheres, it naturally has an impact.

CAI Yi Xiu

CAI Yi Xiu

To CAI Yi Xiu, art is the playground of solitary. His works of Chinese Lacquer act as the bridge between him and the physical world. As his new project, Cai Yi Xiu often falls into a status, of which he feels the nature within and self without. Artist throw himself into the paintings with iterative lacquer layers, through the trace of time, the medium develops into the superimposed image of substance and self.

Danny GIESBERS

 Danny Giesbers

Danny GIESBERS is intrigued by complexity and ever-moving change. That change may be in personality and personal longings, perspectives on society, society’s holism, significant future events and the numerous variables at play, or the interrelationships in an ecosystem. Giesbers’ art feeds on these changes, making his work all about transformation, harmony, dissonance, dimensions, and contemplation of past and present themes. Emotions also drive his art, as he uses it as a gateway to express feelings and evoke one of his favorite emotions, serenity. Thin layers of color and transparent interlayers in his works create a multi-dimensional expression to the viewers.
