GREEDY DOPAMINE—SHIH SIAO-MO solo exhibition

“It is a blessing and a curse, a motivation and a reward.”— <The Molecule of More>  Daniel Z. Lieberman, Michael E. Long

From August 3 to 25 this year, Ting Ting Art Space will host the exhibition “Greedy Dopamine: A Solo Exhibition by Shih Siao-Mo,” showcasing her previously unseen works. Departing from her usual monochromatic palette, this exhibition will present her explosive and unpredictable creativity through high-saturation visuals.

The exhibition focuses on two major series: “Greedy Dopamine” and “Radicals.” The highly visual “Greedy Dopamine” series features geometric distortions and intense, saturated colors, creating a constantly shifting, fluid repetition that symbolizes dopamine’s powerful drive in stimulating emotions and desires. The main works in this series range from size 150 to 800, with the full-frame images offering an extended sense of expansion, allowing viewers to experience dopamine’s tangible, dynamic growth. These pieces exhibit strong visual impact and depth, especially when displayed in public spaces.

The Bliss of Desire Molecules 慾望分子的極樂, 石小墨 Shih Siao Mo, 2023, Acrylic on canvas, 194 x 384 cm

The “Radicals” series represents Shih Siao-Mo’s recent exploration of “tracing back to the origins.” Inspired by the character practice books she used as a child, this series delves into the strokes and combinations of Chinese characters, transforming them into concrete symbols and meanings that ultimately become cultural carriers. Shih views radicals as semantic symbols and attempts to reinterpret the linear history of character development. Through the technique of canvas patchwork, she constructs paintings imbued with the meanings of these symbols.

From Strokes to Philosophy 從筆畫到哲學的旅程, 石小墨 Shih Siao Mo, 2024, Acrylic on canvas, 180 x 120 cm

The “Objects/Events” series serves as a visual side story to this exhibition, stemming from Shih Siao-Mo’s reflections on the insignificant events and moments of daily life. For instance, in “Absurd Daily Object Fantasies,” she captures the moment when papers accidentally fall from a height. This series explores objects not only as static backgrounds that set the atmosphere but also as dynamic participants that trigger events, capturing concrete occurrences through abstract forms.

Shih Siao-Mo

Born in 1972 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Shi Siao-Mo is a contemporary artist currently based in Taipei. She has devoted herself to creating large-scale abstract paintings with thematic depth. Her work spans across fields such as philosophy, psychology, sociology, science, medicine, and geology, supported by theoretical literature, delving deeply into the exploration of human “consciousness.”

Siao-mo’s art is not merely about visual presentation; each stroke carries a profound analysis of the issues she addresses, reflecting on the complex and multifaceted social behaviors of humanity. Whether through her paintings, installations, photography, or videos, she blends a sensuous and dynamic idea with rigorous conceptual reasoning.
